CurriculumThe 1st grade curriculum is based on the Grade Level Content Expectations (GLCE's) set by the State of Michigan as well as the Common Core State Standards (CCSS) and Christian Schools International (CSI). Here is a basic overview of what we will learn this year:
Bible: Walking with God and His People -We will spend most of our year in the Old Testament but will also spend time in the book of 1 John and studying Christmas & Easter. This is the order we will follow: The World God Made Abraham Isaac & Jacob Joseph Moses & Israel Settling the Land Judges, Gideon, Samson & Ruth Christmas Samuel & Saul David King Solomon Psalms & Proverbs Divided Kingdom Exile: Daniel and Esther Return from Exile 1 John Easter Math: Math Expressions -Math Expressions uses hands on activities to promote critical thinking and problem solving while helping students develop a deeper number sense. We will follow these units: Partners & Patterns Through 10 Addition & Subtraction Strategies Unknown Numbers in Addition & Subtraction Place Value Concepts Place Value Situations Comparison & Data Geometry, Measurement, & Equal Shares Two Digit Addition Science: 1st grade Science will incorporate all the different strands of science: physical, life, and earth and it will teach students about science processes. Each will be taught with a distinct Christian Perspective. We will do so through these units: Properties of Objects (5 senses, Sink & Float, Magnets) Parents & Offspring (Growing up, life cycles, animals, habitats) States of Matter (solid, liquid, gas) Weather & Seasons (temperature, clouds/wind, seasons, precipitation) Social Studies: Our social studies curriculum focuses on these social studies strains: citizenship, economics, geography, history, and civics & government. Language Arts:
Language Arts includes many different areas such as Grammar, Reading, Writing, Phonics, and Spelling. We will integrate all these areas by using the Harcourt Trophies curriculum and through incorporating The Daily 5 in our classroom.
